On a beautiful day for golf, Georgian hosted the annual Georgian Grizzlies Invitational Golf Tournament Thursday at Heritage Hills Golf Club.
The tournament featured nine teams from seven schools on the Men's side and three schools on the Women's side.
In what was an incredibly tight three-way race for the top spot Humber captured first among Men's teams with a four-player total of 294. The Hawks narrowly edged out Georgian and Niagara, both of whom finished at 295 and had opportunities down the stretch to overtake first. The runner-up finish marks the third straight event that the Grizzlies Men have finished on the podium this year.
Individually, things were just as close with Georgian's Matt Lemay and Humber's Scott Benzoni both shooting two-under 70's and heading to a playoff after eighteen holes. Following Lemay holing a crucial twelve-footer on the first playoff hole to extend things, his errant tee shot on the second gave Benzoni an opportunity that he capitalized on to claim the Title. Georgian's Jon Collins and Niagara's Ben Kennel and Josiah Dixon each shot 71, finishing in a three-way tie for third.
Things weren't as tight among the Women's teams as Humber's combined score of 155 bested the second place Grizzlies by fourteen strokes. Niagara's Lorell Weavers 75 was enough to beat out Sheila Mckeen from Humber by one stroke individually, with the Hawks Michaela DiMarcantonio's 79 rounding out the top three.
Next up for the Grizzlies is the OCAA Championship, set to take place next week from Monday to Wednesday at Niagara College. Georgian has yet to finish off the podium at an OCAA event this year, and will be looking to continue their strong play with a spot at Nationals on the line.
