The Georgian Grizzlies men's rugby team hosted the OCAA semi-finals against their division rivals the Humber Hawks on Sunday, Nov. 3 at J.C. Massie Field on the Georgian College Barrie campus.
It was an incredible game between two evenly matched teams.
The Humber Hawks rallied back to score two tries and an added convert, which pulled them ahead of the Grizzlies.
Before the end of the first half, Georgian veteran Donovan Jacko (Brampton) was able to regain the lead with a try to give his team a 15-12 lead at halftime.
In the second half the Grizzlies and Hawks battled back and forth before Rodrigo Cuello (Uraguay) broke through past the mid-way point of the half with a try for Georgian.
The Hawks added a late try late by Curtis Sandiford (Richmond Hill) but that was close as they would get as the Grizzlies were able to take a close match 22-19.
The win advances the Grizzlies to the OCAA gold medal game where they will host the Durham Lords in a rematch of last year's final.
Durham won last year's match 21-15 after scoring a try and adding a convert in the game's final moments. The Lords advanced to the gold medal game this season by defeating the Seneca Sting 45-12 on Saturday.
This year the difference is that Georgian will host the gold medal match which will take place at J.C. Massie Field in Barrie next Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
Georgian have guaranteed themselves a medal for the fifth straight season. They have won one gold (2016), two silvers (2015/2018) and a bronze (2017) during that remarkable stretch.
Tickets for the gold medal game will be available at the doors for $5. If you cannot attend the game in person, the game will be streamed online at GeorgianGrizzlies.ca/WatchLive
